Following the death of music legend Prince a few weeks ago, many fans have no doubt been turning to the Purple One’s music to mourn his loss and celebrate his life. Now even folks who don’t own any Prince music can still enjoy his tunes, as 15 of his albums have just been made available on streaming service Tidal.
Tidal released the collection on what would have been Prince’s 58th birthday, the BBC reports, with albums like Purple Rain, Prince, 1999, Sign ‘O’ The Times, The Gold Experience, and Black Album. You won’t be listening free, however, as Tidal is a paid subscription service with membership tiers of either $9.99 or $19.99 per month.
The move shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, considering Prince’s good relationship with Tidal. Though the artist wasn’t too keen on his music being shared on streaming platforms, pulling most of his back catalogue from services like Spotify and Apple Music last year, as the BBC notes, he was a fan of Tidal, releasing his final albums Hitnrun Phase One and Hitnrun Phase Two as Tidal exclusives.
“After one meeting, it was obvious that Jay Z and the team he has assembled at Tidal recognize and applaud the effort that real musicians put in2 their craft 2 achieve the very best they can at this pivotal time in the music industry,” the artist formerly known as “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince” said in August 2015.
Jay-Z himself appears to have hinted at the addition of these Prince albums, rapping on a recent track, “Prince left his masters where they safe and sound—we never gonna let the elevator take him down.” (h/t Quartz)
