It’s been almost a year since Sony launched its PlayStation Vue live-TV streaming service in a limited number of cities. The company is now adding 203 new TV markets to the Vue family for a lower monthly price than its previous streaming TV plans — but without the perk of live broadcast channels.
Vue has thus far offered subscribers in a handful of markets — New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Miami — access to live streams of dozens of cable channels and live streams of local ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX affiliates for $50-70/month. But customers in the new markets will not immediately have that option.
Instead, these customers will get on-demand access to network programming around 24 hours after the shows first air. Sony says that things could change, however, and that CBS might be the first to allow live streams in “select cities at a later date.”
The new bundles are cheaper than the Vue service offered in the original seven markets — so that could help take away some of the sting of not getting those live channels. It’s worth noting that the TV packages for Vue’s existing markets won’t change, and customers in those markets won’t be eligible for the new Slim plans.
Here’s how the Slim bundles break down:
Access Slim: 55+ channels, including live cable TV, movies, and sports channels for $29.99 per month.
Core Slim: 70+ channels, including all the channels from Access Slim with the addition of national and regional sports networks for $34.99 per month.
Elite Slim: 100+ channels, featuring all the channels from Core Slim with the addition of more top movie and entertainment channels for $44.99 per month.
