Yet another restaurant has forgotten to include lessons about why one should not put racial slurs in place of the customer’s name in their order information, since that information is printed out and given to the customer. A black teen in Denver bought a pizza at a Papa John’s franchise, and was surprised to find the racial slur politely called “the N-word” printed on the box.
The Denver Post reports that the teen’s family brought the box to a Denver activist, who posted it to Twitter and got a response from Papa John’s.
A company representative told the Denver Post that identifying customers in this way is not their official policy, and that the employee responsible has been fired. In an e-mailed statement, a spokesman said;
- This action is inexcusable and doesn’t reflect our company values. After an internal investigation, we identified the cause of the issue and the employee is no longer a member of the Papa John’s team. We sincerely apologize for the insensitive behavior of this individual.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened at a Papa John’s restaurant and made the news, though: an employee helpfully typed in a racial slur to identify an Asian customer back in 2012.
In a weird aside that doesn’t really affect the story, the Papa John’s franchise is owned by retired quarterback Peyton Manning, who ended his career playing for the Denver Broncos.
