Many of the largest players in the beer industry recently agreed to finally start including calorie counts on their bottles and cans. While some some fans of these adult beverages might have an idea of how many calories they’re drinking down, others may be in for a surprise.
The members of the American Beer Institute — including Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors, HeinekenUSA, and the Craft Brew Alliance — haven’t yet released the new calorie information, the folks at Nutrition Action have already compiled a list of calorie counts for beer, wine, and bottled cocktails.
Many beers have fewer than 170-calories in a 12 oz. serving — including Budweiser (150), Miller High Life (140), Yuengling (140), and Heinekin (140) — meaning they have fewer calories than a can of Mountain Dew.
Interestingly, according to this list, “light beers” run the gamut from 55 calories (Budweiser Select 55) to 120 calories (Bud Light Lime, Michelob Light, and Sam Adams Light). Even the nation’s two most popular light beers — Bud Light (110) and Miller Lite (100) only have 40 fewer calories per 12 oz. serving than their full-strength counterparts. Of course, if you’re going to be drinking 4-5 of these while tailgating, that relatively small difference could add up to a pretty big number.
Speaking of big numbers, here are a bunch of beers and malt beverages that have more than 215 calories — what you’d get from eating a standard Snickers bar.
