Grandfather Of Waitress Confronts Customer Who “Only Tips Citizens”

A Virginia restaurant customer not only refused to tip her waitress after a recent meal, but left a note on the receipt that implied the server was not a citizen and therefore somehow not deserving of a living wage. When the waitress’s grandfather heard about it, he called the customer out online and confronted her in person when she complained to the restaurant after the picture of the receipt went public.

The grandfather posted the receipt image on Facebook last week, showing how the customer chose to write “We only tip citizens” in the space allocated for entering in a tip amount.

(Just to get it out of the way: The waitress is an American citizen, born in the U.S.)

Her grandfather, a lawyer who works near the restaurant, was incensed after seeing the receipt and decided to share it publicly.

The image began making the rounds, and the couple who’d left the no-tip message eventually returned to the restaurant to gripe that the receipt had been shared online.

The restaurant’s manager tells the Washington Post that the customers were “yelling and screaming about the four digits [of the credit card].”

The manager asked them if they were more upset about the four digits being revealed or that they had been called out on social media. According to him, the response was “Well, both.”

That’s when the grandfather, having heard the customers had come back, showed up for an in-person chit-chat.

He tells the Post that the couple was “belligerent… asking me why I posted it.”

“I said obviously, it was an insult — your signature against my granddaughter — darn right I’m going to post it,” explains the grandpa. “And no apologies.”
