Walgreens Introduces In-Store Pickup For Online Orders

We’re not sure which shoppers have been sitting around dreaming of the day when they could place an online order and pick it up from their neighborhood drugstore, but Walgreens is making that scenario real by adding site-to-store to its e-commerce offering. Is this all a ploy to get you into a store? Yeah, pretty much.

Walgreens, you may recall, acquired Drugstore.com and Beauty.com just over five years ago, then shut the brands down this summer to concentrate on its own e-commerce brand. That meant rolling both brands into Walgreens.com and sending online shoppers over there.

When your local store doesn’t have an item, having it shopped to the store is an option. There are, after all, over 7,000 Walgreens and Duane Reade stores across the country, meaning that most Americans are probably within easy reach of one.

Since shipping an item to a store to pick up doesn’t really save you time, how does this actually help consumers? As far as we can tell, the only benefit is that there’s no lower limit on free shipping to a Walgreens store, but free shipping to your home only kicks in after you spend $35.
