Since turmeric is a key ingredient in curry powder, it was inevitable that the recall of some brands of turmeric for lead contamination would eventually blend lead to the recall of some curry powder. So far, one company whose powder is sold under 5 different brands has announced a recall.
Oriental Trading Company sells under the brand names Blue Mountain, Jamaica Choice, Ocho Rios, Oriental, and Grace. There’s 377,000 pounds of affected curry powder out there.
Gobbling lead isn’t healthy for anyone, but is especially dangerous for developing fetuses whose mothers are exposed to lead, and for children.
We don’t have photos of the containers of affected products, but they were packaged in glass or plastic bottles ranging in size from two ounces to five pounds. Once you identify a product on your shelf, check with the recall announcement at the FDA to find out if your lot is part of the recall.
