Tesla Recalls 2,700 Model X SUVs Because Seats Shouldn’t Fly Forward

Tesla may be basking in the afterglow of receiving 325,000 preorders for its upcoming Model 3 in just one week, but the electric car company hasn’t forgotten about its other two models, including its recently released SUV now being recalled over seat issues.

Tesla announced Monday that it will voluntarily recall 2,700 Model X vehicles after discovering a faulty hinge could cause the third-row seats to fall forward in the event of a crash, Reuters reports.

The recall affects Model X vehicles, which began shipping to customers in September, that were built before March 26.

According to Tesla, the recall was initiated after the seats failed a strength test in the European Union. While the cars previously passed similar tests in the U.S., the company says the EU tests are more stringent.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified starting today.

Tesla’s president of sales and service, Jon McNeil, says the fix will include replacing both third-row seats, and should take about two hours to complete. The entire recall campaign is expected to take about five weeks.

The carmaker says it is unaware of any seat failures or injuries related to the issue.
