It’s not unheard of for an employee to be caught stealing from their employer. But it is a bit unusually for the thieves to be six teenagers and entire theft to total more than $22,000. But that’s exactly what police in Iowa claim happened at a Kohl’s store back in December.
KCRG-TV reports that police arrested six teenagers and are looking for a seventh in connection to a series of thefts during a two-week period at a Kohl’s store.
Authorities say the scheme centered around a 17-year-old employee at the store who helped her friends take a total of $22,136.59 in merchandise without paying between December 3 and December 17, 2014.
The thefts worked when the cashier allegedly scanned and then voided items her friends brought to the register. She would then allow her friends to leave the store with the merchandise and the voided receipts, according to police officials.
A majority of the items taken from the store were men’s and women’s apparel.
“A very small percentage was turned in by the arrestees, but the majority, absolutely not,” a police official tells KCRG-TV.
The store employee was arrested and charged with first-degree theft, while five others – ranging in age from 16 to 18 – were also arrested and charged with second- or third-degree theft. Police have issued a warrant for another teen in connection with the case.
