Remember the guy who was accused of hacking into United Airlines system so he could steal a bunch of travel vouchers and then sell them for a profit? He’s just pleaded guilty.
The 28-year-old New York man pled guilty to second-degree felony charges of unlawful activity, a second-degree felony, as part of a deal, KSL.com reports. Additional second-degree felony charges of computer crimes, theft and communications fraud were dismissed.
His plea will be held in abeyance, meaning if he does get a prison sentence, it could be stayed, and the charge reduced to a class A misdemeanor in a year. To have that happen, he’ll have to complete 80 hours of community service, pays restitution and commits no new crimes.
Investigators said back in May that the man “unlawfully accessed the United Airlines website and obtained Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) codes for Electronic Travel Certificates that had been assigned to United customers but had not yet been redeemed by those customers,” between about July 2012 to September 2012.
All told, he allegedly used 13 vouchers — valued at $7,800 — for personal travel, and sold about 120 more worth $58,000 to others.
