Apple CEO Tim Cook used today’s press event for the new iPhone to once again make his case against court orders trying compel Apple to aid law enforcement in unlocking iPhones belonging to criminal suspects.

“We built the iPhone for you,” said Cook, adding that the Apple phone is a “deeply personal device…
an extension of ourselves.”

The Apple CEO commented that there is a “need to decide as a nation how much power the government should have over our data and over our privacy.”

Cook said that Apple did not expect to be “at odds with our own government,” but added that “we have a responsibility to help you protect your data and your privacy… This is an issue that impacts all of us and we will not shrink from this responsibility.”
